New Plans

Since we were unable to film over the weekend, we have booked an hour in the college theatre, after college (today 29th Nov). We have taken out the equipment we need and our actors have confirmed that they shall be present for the shoot. However, we are short of one band member, so Connor shall be playing the role of the vocalist.
We plan to use the lighting from the Theater's lighting booth, as the lights are more professionally positioned above the acting space.
We've changed the location for our performance part of the music video from the basement environment to the college theatre, because the theatre location is more convenient for our actors to get to. It also allows us to create a set similar to one seen in one of 'Bloc Party's previous music videos, 'Hunting For Witches'.

Website Update- Shawn And Will

We are making progress on our website design. We are building it on Photoshop and plan to import the final result on iWeb. So far we have our navigation bar just under our logo, and we have created a Tour Dates box to keep fans informed on upcoming gigs and concerts. An image of the Luno CD cover is also being advertised to make fans aware of the new release. The next step we wish to take here is to finish creating a playlist where fans viewing this site can listen to samples of some of Bloc Party's music. After designing the tabs for the site we will add pictures of band and a behind scenes section including additional pictures and videos.

Plans for Saturday the 26th Nov

c 26th of November is the arranged date for our first shoot. We have booked our equipment and actors are on standby. We plan to shoot the entire performance aspect of our 'Luno' music video this saturday afternoon; commencing from 3:00pm onwards.

While we await the filming date we are focusing on our album digipak and our website. We have made good progress on these, using Connor's ideas from the designs he drew in our planning folder. We made a point of keeping font consistent through the website and the digipak to maintain the 'Gill Sans' as the font that Bloc Party fans will associate with Bloc Party. We are also sticking to the conventions of digipak art which Bloc Party use consistently through their albums, by having a conceptual image with black and white tones. 

Play Button Thing-Will Collier

We tried to make a 'play system' for our website that the audience would click on. We used lots of tutotials on Youtube





They were helpful but some of them were hard to use because we were using different versions of photoshop to them.

This is the main box that the play button is going to sit in. It will be overlaid in photoshop later.

CD Cover inside research

This is he inside cover for the CD cover, we will try and recreate a similar cover with allot of text including extra track remixes, website and people who helped produce the track.

The CD is actually the same as the image on the front of the CD Cover, with the same colours and theme. we will also incorporate this into our cd aswell

Website design trial 1

Here we have started designing our Webpage layout. It was only a trial to see how the software, iWeb, worked and what kind of colours and fonts we wish to include. We got some inspiration from from blocparty.com, and decided to include the picture links to both Facebook and Twitter for social networking. Further work shall be done on the Webpage when we have gathered photos of our band and other relevant images.

Emailing Bloc Party for permission

 Today we sent a message via Twitter to the official Bloc Party page. The message asked for permission on whether we could use their track 'Luno' for our music video (as shown above).

Our slides are all made up of images, headings, and hyperlinks. This was because instead of having paragraphs of text for our class to read, we decided to take a more engaging approach and run everyone through our research and ideas, directly. This made for a more affective presentation to sell our idea.

CD Cover Draft

This is our draft version of our CD cover for Luno. We took the same theme as the other single artwork from the album Silent Alarm, the theme consists of minimal colours, with a small image in the middle with the colours from the middle going throughout onto the larger part of the image. these colour themes are plain.

Here is our Step Otline Sheet, as part of our Advanced Portfolio. This basically maps out what is happening at certain times in the music video.

CD Cover Research.

This is the album cover from which Luno is taken from, The theme of the album is simplicity, this can be seen on the aesthetics of the album. The album cover is very plain and simple, this reflects the image of the band, They wanted to be portrayed as normal as possible and not show their fame. The album covers are usually plain colours with a small square image in the middle with the main colour of the small image being the main colour on the outer region of the cover. Then with the Famous Gill Sans font that Bloc Party are famous for using, going along with the plain imagery that they so faithfully believe in.

As you can see from these five tracks that were released from that album that the theme is very simple,  referring back to earlier the colours run throughout from the image in the square and onto the backdrop.Because this is the theme running throughout the album, we thought that we also had to do this style,  our CD cover will be black with a picture of a white peace lilly in the centre square. with black running out from the photo onto the backdrop of the CD cover, keeping with the plain simple aesthetics that Bloc Part are famous for

I chose to do this video because it is very conceptual and has some very strange/quirky editing techniques.

The video that I analysed was 'Helicopter' a previous Bloc Party music video. I chose this because the video has content similar to some of the content we shall be using in our music video for 'Luno'.

Shooting Date No. 1 - 26th Nov

We are currently focusing on getting the performance side of our music video complete before we begin the conceptual narrative side; following the girl who experiences flash backs of her past.

The Performance shall be filmed in a basement, located at Shawn's Grandparent's house. The date we have in mind for this shoot is on 26th November.

Female actor for Music Video

This will be our female actor in our music video, she fits the purpose very well, with her inidie, brunette and messed up indie appearance. This fits with the music nicely and the key conventions and ideologies of our band and indie music.

Digipak Cover Research - Shawn Briggs

Below is the Digipak for the album 'Minutes to Midnight' by 'Linkin Park', a band which is similar to 'Bloc Party's genre of music in the sense that they both use heavy strings and industrial sounds in their music. As you can see, this digipak shows light and dark tones, similar to 'Bloc Party's album digipak 'Silent Alarm'.
'Bloc Party' and 'Linkin Park' are both well known and highly popular bands, both using the similar conceptual style of photography on their digipaks. From this research I have found that maybe the black and white tones, mixed with conceptual photography is the style of image a consumer would expect to see on the digipak of an Indie/Rock/Rave band, such as 'Bloc Party'.

Here is the next digipak I am now going to analyse. This is 'The Killers' 'Greatest Hits' album. Again, the digipak is completely in black and white, apart from the album name in a red font, and uses photography as its front cover, even though it doesn't appear as conceptual as 'Bloc Party' or 'Linkin Park's covers. This constistant style for albums either sounding like, or aiming at the same target consumers as 'Bloc Party' gives the impression that this is what the producers associate with the Industrial/Indie/Rock/Rave market; meaning that perhaps the consumers of that particular market will identify another similar style digipak as the genre of music which they listen to; hense informing them that this is the product for them.

We have designed the digipak for our band, we have kept it very similar to the digipaks that bloc party have done. They keep it very simple, one image and big text which is easy to read. We plan to have a simple 'peace lilly on the front' this will symbolise the song. on the back we are having a picture of the band.

We are going to have a similar album to this, as you can see it is very minimal and it is easy to see the album is by bloc party.

Then the alternative twist is with the music like the guitar FX and synthesizers will be represented through quirky logos and patters in the clothing.

Lighting For Our Video

The lights we are planning are Floor Lights, Strobe Light and a Torch. We are using the floor lights to produce a light source originating from the floor, highlighting out band members more clearly for our camera. The Strobe is to display certain shots as fast moving. The Torch is to highlight our band members' faces and instruments. We shall set these lights up in a fashion, giving the effect of 3 Point Lighting; having the strobe flickering behind the band whilst having the floor lights in front of them and a free moving torch.

This is a word cloud i created, we used the website: Wordle.net. It allows you to see the main words used in a website, this shows you important words which you can use later. I used the font 'chunkfive' and had the layout on half and half, this means half the words are vertical and half are horizontal.

This is a word cloud, created on wordle.net. Opening two tabs on my browser, one on wikipedia looking at bloc party, and another on the Wordle homepage. I copied a large quantity of text from the Bloc Party section on Wikipedia and pasted it on Wordle. Then clicking the 'Go' button on the page it created a word cloud which I could then edit as I see fit to have it take on some of the characteristics of the 'Bloc Party' design.

Artist Research - Synergy and Marketing

Bloc Party use a lot of techniques to maintain there image across a range of media. One way they do this is by using images from one type of media and using it another. For example on Bloc Partys' website they use stills from there music videos, this means the audience will go on there website and recognise that it i bloc party from there videos.

The band has really proffesional cd covers that are unique to the album and very conceptual. They always have something to do with the name of the album. E.g Intemacy.

On their website they have linked the images to take you to different pages/sites. When you click the 'itunes' photo it takes you straight to an itunes website where you can purchase the bands tracks. Getting the audience involved like this is great for selling songs and the audience will think it is an easy process to buy the songs. 

Artist Research - Visual Style and Image - Will Collier

Clothes wise the band usually wear jeans and ss tshirt. you would expect to see guitars, bass, drums, vocals because of the rock genre. We would also expect to hear synth, have lights and lasers because of the more pop/indie side of the genre of bloc party. There visual style is represented as being relaxed and chilled, they look as if they don't care about there look but someone will have put thought into the fashion. In Some videos, For Example in The Prayer they have quirky, conceptual editing.

But in One more chance they use camera shots like close-ups so we see the characters face and emotion



In the Video Flux they have taken the theme from the film Godzilla. They have big japanese monsters fighting, This is using other media texts in their videos.




They also featured in an episode of The Simpsons, This is an example of intertextuality, when a text makes deliberate references to other media texts by stealing bits of it.
