Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation: Question 3

This is a word cloud, made from http://www.wordle.net/. the larger words are the ones used more frequently on the questionnaires.
There weren't many bad comments on the reflective feedback sheets, the main problem was that people didn't understand the narrative.

A2 Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation - Question One (Part 3/3) - Music Video

This is our final Music Video, embedded from YouTube:

Here is one of Bloc Party's previous Music Videos:

And finally, here's an existing Music Video from an artist of similar genre to Bloc Party:

Firstly the similarities between the existing music videos and our finished music video begin with the way the video is shot. We noticed that the existing music videos in the genre of music we were looking at all had a cinematic quality to them; by showing good quality framing and controlled lighting. We shot our music video in this way as it brought visual appeal to our music video which is what a music video is supposed to include.
As seen in Bloc Party's Hunting For Witches music video, they set up the band performing in a spotlight. This set up has also been used in Bloc Party's Banquet music video, showing repetition of the same concept (just like how they film in Black & White in a few of their other music videos). We decided to use the spotlight concept for our band performance to recreate an image that our audience would recognize as a Bloc Party concept; plus it shows our use of lighting within the production of the video.

In the narrative of our music video we challenged the convention of boy-meets-girl and instead had a girl-meets-girl scenario. This was to bring an innovative quality to the narrative of our music video. We originally had a boy-meets girl scenario in our music video, but then decided to develop the idea further by having the girl-meets-girl story line.

Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation: Question 2

We wanted to create the same conventions and imagery throughout the cd digi pak design. We tried to keep the same theme as colours and style. We made these colourways run throughout all 3 formats; The CD Digi Pak, The website4 and finally the Music video. We thought if we intergrated the colours that it would make the project seem more connected as a whole.
We wanted to keep the conventions to the genre and style. we wanted to keep the electronic rock indie look throught, so we encourperated bright colours to contrast the black to stick to these conventions.

For our Digi pak we have made an original CD cover that is Bloc Party related and is very similar to the original. However for our website i feel that it doens't entirely fit in with our image, i think this is due to the 'light trails' that we put down the side of the website. We put them there to make the website seem more vibarnt rather than just black and white but to me it feels like the would be more assosiated with a dance/Drum and bass genre.

Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation: Question 1, Part 3

This is Bloc Party's homepage for their Website, as you can see it is very simple and minimalistic, this reflects in their music and music videos.
This gafve us very little help on our website design.
The Band has currently split up this could be the reason for the very minimalistic approach.
Imagery is the key think on this webiste along with giving information about previous gigs and information on the band reviving.
Th
This is our Interpretation of Bloc Party's website, as theirs was so minimal we had to try and create our own website from scratch.
we tried to keeo to the small conventions that we could, like the out now box, and the tour box ect.
Also another key convention we thought that outstood was the banner and images of the band, we thought this gave a real homely sense to the website.

Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation: Question 1; Part 2

This is my DigiPak design that I created,  I tried to make it as close to the real digi pak as possible as it was from the same album as the other tracks. The key conventions are almost identicakl as I wanted to make the CD Cover as close to the real thing as possible.

This is he inside cover for the CD cover, we will try and recreate a similar cover with allot of text including extra track remixes, website and people who helped produce the track.

The CD is actually the same as the image on the front of the CD Cover, with the same colours and theme. we will also incorporate this into our cd aswell

Advanced Portfolio Evaluation | Question Three- Wordle | Will Collier

This is a word cloud, made from http://www.wordle.net/. I put all of the words from the feedback sheets into the website and it creates this word cloud. The size of the words is dependant on how frequent the words are.

Advanced Portfolio Evaluation | Question Three | Will Collier

This is an audience feedback questionnaire. In class we filled out a sheet for other groups music videos, they give you a good opinion of posotives and negatives about your music video. They highight key areas that might need improving and bits that they like the most.

we also had to give a score out of 40 that we thought was appropriate for the video. On average ours recieved 37/40, this was a high level 4.

The main points highlighted about our music video were that some of the lip syncing was out and that the narrative was slightly confusing. We didn't have time to change the music video to fit the feedback due to lack of editing time (we would have if more time was availavle)

I think the audience feedback is fair as it could seem confusing for the audience as it is fast pace so everything is happeneing quickly.

The main posotives were about the band performance with the spotlight, the fast editing and the unexpected twist in the story. I think the feedback liked the fact of this special twist because it it targeted a 'boyish' audience and it challeneged the typical boy and girl love story.

Advanced Portfolio Evaluation | Question Two | Will Collier

We tried to maintain a clear image throughout by using the same colour scheme and keeping certain conventions that Bloc Party would use. For example we kept the same black and white colour scheme throughout most of our products. The CD and Website are mostly dominated by black and white with the odd bits of colour and the video has a large black and white theme to it.

We tried to keep the feel of indie band because of the misour products similar to the genre of the music, indie rock. I thing we have achieved this in our music video as the band look like a typical indie band due to the mise-en-scene.

For our Digipak we have made an original CD cover that is Bloc Party related. However for our website i feel that it doens't entirely fit in with our image, i think this is due to the 'light trails' that we put down the side of the website. We put them there to make the website seem more vibarnt rather than just black and white but to me it feels like the would be more assosiated with a dance/Drum and bass genre.

The whole purpose of the products is to promote Bloc Party by targeting a specific audience. With the video it is targeted at a teenage audience. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to the song aswell as the video. The website has several things that help promote the band. The use of social networking sites, this targets the teenage audience because almost every teenager is linked to atleast one social networking site.

A2 Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation- Question Two (Part 2/2) - Existing Official Texts

This is Bloc Party's official website's 'Home Page'. The layout is minimalistic on content but no space on the page is absent of any imagery or text. The objective of this website is mainly designed to keep consumers up to date on the latest news to do with Bloc Party as well as their gigs and releases. The website's layout could be seen as innovative because of the simple nature of its design and still manages to appeal in its appearance. Perhaps the simple layout allows for it to be easy to navigate and avoids long paragraphs of text that could easily overwhelm the page.
Our website takes the less minimalistic approach as we added a few extra features such as the music-box and advert to promote our product more thoroughly. Our layout is also different, presenting more text and links for our consumers to navigate through; we wanted to ensure that our consumers had access to as much information as possible so that they would be up to date with the latest releases. We also wished to show images of the whole band so that our target audience could see the artists behind Bloc Party.

Existing Bloc Party Music Videos include cinematic shots and effects adding a sense of energy to bring excitement to viewers as they watch the video. After a consumer has watched the video they may find themselves more persuaded to purchase the music so that when they listen to it they can remember the excitement they experienced whilst watching the song's video. The video is also in a format that can be played on music channels, so potential consumers can discover the music via the television.

The digipaks for Bloc Party all have similarities with each other; by having the conventions of conceptual photography relating to the album and some have images isolated in boxes in the centre of the front cover. Also the digipaks consistently have minimal text and images on them. This may be used as to entice consumers into buying the album through curiosity rather than having massive images and texts that jump out at the target market shouting "Buy me!" We maintained this idea of minimalist content on the digipak; designing a digipak with a similar layout to previous Bloc Party digipaks to make it recognizable by those familiar with Bloc Party's conceptual, visual appeal.

A2 Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation - Question three (Part 2/2) - Audience Feedback

We gathered Audience Feedback by handing out a questionnaire in class, having them answer the questions whilst thy watched our finished Music Video. This was affective as it allowed us to gather a range of answers for the same question from each media group in the class, allowing us to see what stood out most in our music video amongst a large group of consumers. Although, since the members of the class are our peers as well as class mates reviews may be biased, depriving us of a more critical review, leaving us without mention of any errors or negative opinions that might have aided us in our evaluation of the final product.
The main issue raised, which was spotted by two reviewers, was a moment in our music video where the lip syncing wasn't precise (an error that would have been solved if more time to edit our music video was available). The majority of our feedback consisted of positive comments to do with the concept of our music video, the shots used and the fast paced editing.

Overall, we acquired the majority of the feedback we intended to bring out of our audience. We wanted the pace of the editing to fit the pace of the music, "Luno", creating a parallel between visuals and sound. We especially wanted our audience to be affected by the scene where we see two girls kissing in the bedroom, because not only does it present sex-appeal to the video (aiming the product at men for this video) it also breaks the generic convention of "boy-meets-girl", captivating our audience with an innovative narrative of "girl-meets-girl".

A2 Advanced Portfolio: Reflective Evaluation - Question three (Part 1/2) - Wordle Post

Here we have a Wordle of the most frequent words that appeared amongst our audience feedback. The most frequent words are in the largest font size, whereas the least frequent are smaller. I have a positive response to this as it shows that the most positive words were the most frequent.

Advanced Portfolio Evaluation | Question One-DigiPak | Will Collier

This is our digipak that we created, We tried to keep it similar to Bloc Party's DigiPak. As you can see we tried to kept the image within a box and the same style of font, the font style was Gill Sans. This was a common convention with all of Bloc Partys CD Covers in the album Silent Alarm.

Advanced Portfolio Evaluation | Question One-Music Video | Will Collier

This is our music video that we have created over the last few months; we used the song Luno by Bloc Party. The video is about a teenage girl who cheated on her boyfirend, as she walks through the house and into different rooms; she walks into different memories of what she did to him. As well as having the narrative side of the video we also intergrated a band performing.

There are lots of similarities with our music video and videos that Bloc Party has produced. In a lot of the videos Bloc Party's video Black and White is a very dominant feature, For example in helicopter Black and White is used on every clip and on the song Banquet, black and white is used on most of the clips. We tried to match this by keeping a black and white aspect in our video.

                                Helicopter                                                                         Banquet

We tried to follow the conventions in terms of mise-en-scene with our video, for example we tried to keep the clothes the similar to what Bloc Party would actually wear. In our video the band are moslty wearing jeans and t-shirts which matches the bloc party style. We made sure the band looked like a band by keeping the same conventions of a rock band with the guitars, bass guitars and drums.

Another similarity between our video and that of Bloc Partys is the intergration of the band into the narrative aspect of the story. In 'One more chance' the band members are intergrated into the narrative aspect of the story. We tried to keep to these conventions.

In our music video we challenged conventions by using a variety of differnt shot types and shots at different angles, We also used a lot of editing effects and techniques to challenge conventions, in most of Bloc Party's videos they use a variety of shot types but and use editing to give the video a quirky feel. In ours we have used effects that are more fitting to the rock genre. We tried using earthquake, flashes and fades. This created an effect that represented the bass of the song, we later syned the effect so it was just before the solo.
